X. Overview of cookies

I. What are cookies and what are they used for?

Cookies are technologies that are used to access or store information on end devices such as computers or mobile devices. Cookies are usually set when you visit our website and store certain settings and exchange certain information about your browser with our system to ensure that our websites work or work efficiently.

On the one hand, we use cookies that are necessary for the technical operation of our website. We also use cookies that serve to analyze your interaction with our website and our offers or to provide personalized advertising on our website and/or on third-party websites and apps.

II. Types of cookies

Further information on the cookies we use can be found in sections IV to VII.

Differentiation by cookie provider

There are cookies that are set by us as the operator of the website and responsible for the associated data processing (so-called first-party cookies). However, there are also cookies that are set by third parties who act on our behalf or are also (jointly) responsible for data processing (so-called third-party cookies).

Differentiation according to storage duration

Transient cookies are automatically deleted when you close the browser. These include session cookies in particular. We store a so-called session ID with which various requests from your browser can be assigned to the joint session. This allows your computer to be recognized when you return to our website. The session cookies are deleted when you log out or close the browser.

We use transient cookies to make our website more user-friendly. Some elements of our website require that the accessing browser can be identified even after a page change. The following data, for example, is stored and transmitted in the cookies:

  • Browser settings relating to cookies (whether they are activated or not)
  • Language settings of the user
  • Log-in information

We also use persistent cookies on our website, which enable an analysis of the user's surfing behavior. Persistent cookies are automatically deleted after a specified period, which may vary depending on the cookie. In this way, the click behavior of users on our websites can be recorded and evaluated (recorded data are e.g. browser data, click frequency, bounce rate, etc.).

Data collected via persistent cookies is pseudonymized by technical precautions, meaning that it is no longer possible to assign the data to the accessing user. The data is not stored together with other personal data of the user.

Differentiation according to intended use

We divide the cookies we use into different categories depending on their function and purpose:

  • Necessary: Necessary cookies enable basic functions and are absolutely essential for the website to function properly.
  • Preferences: Preference cookies enable us to display the website based on your input and information. For example, the website is displayed in the respective language based on the region in which you are located.
  • Statistics: Statistics cookies help us to understand how visitors use our website. These cookies are only set with your express consent.
  • Marketing: Marketing cookies allow us to measure the success of our advertising campaigns and create custom audiences to better target marketing activities on other websites and social networks.

If the cookies are not absolutely necessary, i.e. are only set after you have given your consent, you can revoke your consent to the use of cookies at any time with effect for the future. A detailed explanation of how this is possible can be found in section III.

Technical types of cookies

We use cookies and similar technologies, such as tracking or pixels. These are code snippets measuring only 1x1 pixels, which are able to identify and recognize your browser type via the browser ID - the individual fingerprint of your browser. This allows the service provider to see when and how many users have accessed the pixel, or whether and when an email was opened or a website visited.

In order to adapt our services to your needs and to be able to present you with individual offers, we also use so-called local storage technology. With this technology, certain data is stored in the local cache of your browser. This data is retained even after you have closed your browser and can be retrieved and read by us the next time you visit our website.

Local storage allows us to save your preferences when you use our websites. The data from the local storage is used on our websites, for example, so that you do not have to make certain selections again after the first entry, so that your selection for certain formats on our websites is retained when you visit again or so that you are shown a preselection of interesting articles.

III. Revoking consent and changing your cookie settings

If the cookies are not absolutely necessary, you can revoke your consent to the use of cookies at any time with effect for the future and adjust your cookie settings individually

You can revoke your consent to the collection of data by cookies at any time. The following steps are required for this:

  • Open the settings for cookies on our websites via the footer "Cookie settings" or using the "overlay function" at the bottom left of the browser
  • In the window that then opens, you have the option to revoke the data processing for individual categories of cookies and comparable technologies (e.g. data storage in local storage).

In addition, you can also delete cookies at any time in your browser settings or adjust the corresponding cookie settings of the browser you are using. For more information on how you can delete and/or manage cookies via your browser settings, please visit the help pages of the respective browser. Data from the local storage can also be removed by emptying the local storage of the browser you are using.
