ENERTRAG signs commercialization agreement with GazelEnergie for its first battery storage project in France
ENERTRAG, independent renewable energy producer, and GazelEnergie, energy producer and supplier, have signed a long-term agreement for a battery energy storage system "Les Sablons".
Located in the Hauts-de-France region, Les Sablons is ENERTRAG first Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in France. With a capacity of 39 MW / 117 MWh and a three-hour discharge duration, the project is among the first large-scale battery storage projects to be installed in France.
The project stands out through its colocation with two wind farms developed by ENERTRAG. Together, they form one of France's first sites to combine large-scale wind energy production and electricity storage within a single energy perimeter. This configuration represents a total installed capacity of 120 MW connected to the grid via the ENERTRAG private substation. It reflects an integrated approach aimed at improving renewable energy integration and strengthening the control and flexibility capabilities of the electrical system.
The long-term agreement with GazelEnergie will come into effect in 2027. During its term, GazelEnergie will control the charging and discharging of the battery under the commercialization agreement, while ENERTRAG will remain responsible for operation and maintenance services.
“Les Sablons marks ENERTRAG first battery energy storage system (BESS) project in France and a major step in our expansion into the French flexibility market. By combining wind energy and battery storage on the same site, the project completes our integrated value chain from renewable generation to flexibility solutions. With a total installed capacity of 120 MW connected through ENERTRAG private substation, Les Sablons is among the first large-scale co-located wind and storage projects in France. Flexibility is central to the evolution of the energy system and has been a strategic priority for ENERTRAG for years. We are proud of the development of this project, carried out in close consultation with local stakeholders." says Vincent Masureel, Managing Director of ENERTRAG France.
“We are pleased to support ENERTRAG in the development of Les Sablons project, which has come with a solution tailored to its needs and the financing challenges associated with these assets. Our proven 100 MW-experience of battery storage in France allows us to support developers and provide them with robust solutions that can be combined with multiple business models. Flexibility is fully integrated in our strategy, alongside aggregation and energy supply, thus allowing GazelEnergie to provide energy developers and consumers with a global offering.” adds Jérôme Wolff, Managing Director of GazelEnergie.
Les Sablons project is part of the €1.1 billion investment program announced by ENERTRAG at the 2026 Choose France Summit. Construction will start in 2026, with commercial operation scheduled in 2027.
