Repowering for the Sonnenberg wind farm – more energy, fewer turbines

Clean electricity for around 300,000 people - with 29 modern wind turbines.

We have been operating the Sonnenberg wind farm in the municipality of Oschersleben (Börde district) for over 20 years.

We are now modernizing the site: 37 older turbines (75.2 MW) are being replaced by 29 new, more powerful turbines - with a total output of 197.2 MW and an expected annual yield of 464 GWh.

This will make the wind farm almost three times as powerful, with fewer turbines in the landscape.

How repowering works

Repowering involves replacing older wind turbines with new, more efficient ones. This allows significantly more electricity to be generated on the same area - with less impact on the environment and landscape.

  • Fewer turbines, more power: state of-the-art turbines with higher efficiency
  • Better use of space: greater distances, less visual impact
  • Sustainable dismantling: old turbines are professionally dismantled and recycled
Sustainable dismantling

The existing wind turbines are dismantled in a controlled manner:
Rotor blades, towers and foundations are dismantled, recycled and reused. The land is then recultivated and made available to farmers as farmland again.

Local participation & commitment

The municipality of Oschersleben is actively supporting the project with its own development plan. The region also benefits directly: the new Saxony-Anhalt Participation Act means that surrounding municipalities will receive at least €5,500 per megawatt of output per year in future - at Sonnenberg wind farm, this amounts to around €1.08 million per year.

We are also involved with:

  • Donations and sponsorship for local associations
  • Awarding contracts to regional service providers
  • Citizen participation via the ENERTRAG Energy Euro
Species protection & compensation

We implement extensive compensation measures for the impact on nature and the landscape:

  • 7.5 ha alternative area for red kites
  • New planting of hedges and rows of trees
  • Unsealing of concrete surfaces
  • Creation of a meadow orchard

To protect birds and bats, the turbines are automatically switched off in certain weather conditions or during sensitive periods.

Sound and shade management

All planned turbines comply with the legal requirements for noise and shadow impact.
Automatic shutdown mechanisms take effect if noise levels are exceeded - for safe and compatible operation.

A project for the future

Repowering Sonnenberg shows how technology, climate protection and regional value creation can go hand in hand. With fewer turbines and more power, we are strengthening the energy transition - and the region benefits directly too.
