ENERTRAG joins aireg as a member

Dauerthal/Berlin, 8 August 2024 - Sustainable aviation fuels will play an increasingly important role in global aviation. ENERTRAG is therefore joining the aviation initiative aireg (Aviation Initiative for Renewable Energy in Germany) to work with other members on the climate-friendly transformation of aviation.

ENERTRAG specializes in the production of green hydrogen and the integration of renewable energy into various applications, including sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). The company operates numerous projects in Germany and South Africa aimed at promoting the production and use of SAF. In Germany, “Concrete Chemicals” with partners Cemex and Sasol is a flagship project that converts captured CO2 from cement production into sustainable aviation fuels using green hydrogen. ENERTRAG continues to be involved in the development of the Schwedt and Schwarze Pumpe sites in Lusatia (Lausitz) into centers for the energy transition. Of particular note is the South African HyShift project, which recently received the COP28 Energy Transition Changemakers Award. This project impressively demonstrates the potential of green hydrogen as a key component for a sustainable future of aviation.

Another unique selling point of ENERTRAG is the innovative integrated power plant, which combines wind energy, photovoltaics and green hydrogen in one integrated system. This power plant enables a continuous and reliable supply of renewable energy and underlines ENERTRAG's leading role in the development of sustainable energy solutions.

Dr. Tobias Bischof-Niemz, Board Member for Projects International & Technology at ENERTRAG, expresses his enthusiasm about the new membership: “We are very pleased to be part of aireg and to work together with other members on the further development and promotion of sustainable aviation fuels. Our projects in Germany and South Africa, in particular the award-winning HyShift project, demonstrate our commitment and innovative strength in the field of SAF.”

Melanie Form, Managing Director and Member of the aireg Board, says about joining: “With its innovative projects at national and international level, ENERTRAG is making an important contribution to the promotion of sustainable aviation fuels and supporting the climate-friendly transformation of aviation. ENERTRAG's commitment to expanding the German sites is crucial to our goal of establishing Germany as a leading market for SAF. We are therefore looking forward to future cooperation and exchange.”

About ENERTRAG
ENERTRAG has been implementing the energy transition for more than 25 years. Over 1000 employees plan, build and operate integrated power plants: based on wind and solar power plants, our own grid infrastructure, batteries and electrolysers. These supply electricity, heat and green hydrogen reliably and in line with demand – replacing any fossil-fuel power plant.
With our own plants, we generate around 2,000 gigawatt hours of electricity from wind and sun every year and have been producing green hydrogen since 2011. On this basis, we are developing energy projects with a capacity of over 15 gigawatts – in nine countries on four continents.
ENERTRAG stands for the global energy supply of the future: sustainable, secure, regionally anchored. So that our planet remains livable.

About aireg e.V.
aireg – the Aviation Initiative for Renewable Energy in Germany e.V. was established in 2011 as a consortium of companies and organisations from industry, research, and academia.
