Wind energy projects in forests as part of the energy transition

Forestry and wind energy have one thing in common: both play a key role in climate protection. Unfortunately, forests are severely damaged in many places - whether due to pest infestation, drought and prolonged periods of heat or storm events and forest fires. Around 285,000 hectares need to be reforested in this country. This corresponds to almost 400,000 soccer pitches or the size of the Saarland. In many cases, this damage is a result of man-made climate change - with the result that forest areas are often in a very critical condition. So-called calamity areas are created. There is an acute need for action from both an ecological and a forestry perspective: the areas as a whole must be better prepared for (climate-related) challenges. Many forestry companies, but also private forest owners, are often faced with the major challenge of adequately caring for their damaged areas. Reforestation can be a major - and financial - hurdle, especially in the case of extreme damage. Reforestation with suitable tree species costs around €12,000 per hectare.

Wind energy as a promising prospect

Wind energy concepts in forests offer important opportunities for forest owners and climate protection. This is due to the decades of financial support as well as the direct measures to sustainably strengthen the areas. Moreover, forestry operations are not restricted by the wind turbines. No more than 0.5 hectares of land must be kept permanently free for the operation, service and maintenance of a wind turbine. Cleared areas are reforested in coordination with the specialist authorities at a ratio of at least one to one. Resilient trees are used to create climate-stable forest areas. When the turbines are dismantled at a later date, access roads, parking spaces and the site that are no longer required are also dismantled and reforested to a high standard.

Wind energy projects in forests are also very compatible with species protection. The reforestation of damaged areas and the associated increase in structural diversity ensure that the ecosystem as a whole becomes healthier and more robust in the long term, thus creating new habitats.
